Beam Masking System for PV Receiver Window

Testing showed the transmitter's beam profile was less Gaussian than expected, with too much power density concentrated at the center relative to what the PV cells at the receiver could handle. I brought forward the idea of masking the beam at the receiver window to limit how much power reached the center.

I developed the process for manufacturing and applying the mask: cutting a specialized film (process details withheld) and bonding it to the window with an optically clear adhesive. I also took part in the shape design for the mask itself.

This was part of a broader testing effort on the receiver, which included a lot of laser testing on the assembly as well as supply chain research and testing for thermal interface materials (TIM); trialing different patterns and materials to find the thermal resistance the receiver needed.
